Navigating Market Volatility with Confidence: The Role of FIAs

For clients seeking stability, annuities continue to gain attention—and sales reflect that interest. In 2024, annuity sales hit $434.1 billion, up 13% year-over-year, according to LIMRA. Among the various options, fixed indexed annuities (FIAs) stand out for offering both protection and growth. FIA sales grew 32% in 2024 to $126.9 billion, and they’re expected to stay above $100 billion in 2025.

FIAs help clients remain confident in their long-term plans—no matter what’s happening in the markets. Here’s why:

1. Market Protection and Growth in One Product
Clients want to protect their savings and still see growth. With inflation and longer lifespans, growing retirement income is more important than ever. A 65-year-old couple today has an 85% chance that at least one partner will live to 85—and a 64% chance to 90.

Traditional “safe” investments like CDs and Treasuries often struggle to keep up. FIAs offer 100% downside protection and growth potential linked to indices like the S&P 500. Some even credit a fixed return if the index is flat or positive—offering secure, steady growth.

2. Diversification Beyond Traditional “Safe” Assets
A balanced portfolio is key, but traditional safe havens like bonds and CDs don’t always deliver. With interest rate swings and inflation, even CDs have had negative real returns in 16 of the past 20 years.

FIAs can strengthen a portfolio’s resilience and provide long-term growth potential—even when stocks seem volatile. History shows stocks have delivered positive returns 73% of the time since 1928, and FIAs help clients stay invested without the same risk.

3. Tax Advantages that Compound Over Time
Taxes are a major factor in retirement planning. FIAs offer tax deferral, meaning clients aren’t taxed on growth until income is withdrawn. That allows gains to compound over time. Plus, clients can adjust allocations annually without triggering taxable events.

While we can’t predict the markets, we can guide clients toward strategies that boost confidence and security. Simplifying the value of products like FIAs can help deepen client relationships and build long-term trust.
